im Chinese-British. my ancestors was originated from Foshan (佛山) but life was hard during that time so they migrated to Vietnam and lived there for 5 generations. During the 70s there were diplomatic issues with china and Vietnam. so most Chinese had to leave and migrate elsewhere. some went back to china and others went to foreign countries. my family came to England and settled.

Wow, I didn't expect your family to have such a rich experience. You grew up in London. Your English must be very good. You can speak English as fluently as other foreigners. I really envy you.

English is just a dialect i grew up with, nothing worth mentioning. I actually prefer speaking in Cantonese, as it gives me a sense of bond to my ethnicity. it's just a shame that i didn't put more effect into learning how to read and write in Chinese during my early years.

well, thank you. my generation was the first to be born here in England. As for my parents, it was difficult for them to speak English so we had to become their interpreter. not understanding Cantonese was not an option. also, I love hong kong drama during that period. which contributed to my Cantonese and for my older generations, during Vietnam there were a lot of Cantonese speakers living there.

How do you watch Hong Kong drama in England? By youtube? It's really difficult for the older generation to go to strange places, some of my friends‘ parents they lives China town for their whole life.

During the 80s-90s there was no internet. The place where we could get hong kong entertainment were from china town, there you could rent VHS (video cassette tape). then we had TVB international broadcasting satellite, where we could watch it's content with a yearly subscription through a satellite service. but we watch mostly rented tapes. if you where born after the year 2000, i don't think you would know what a video cassette tape is. thankfully my parents managed to pick up the language eventually, which was due to attending local community services and the people there treated them very humbly.
