Conan is more kid friendly.

The reason why its more popular I assume is because of the strangeness of it.
a high school kid who turns into a elementary kid with a high school sweet heart and is living with her.
The gadgets will appeal to kids, but the Detective Kids aswell.
Each case is separate and no clear plot is seen till Conan stumbles across more Black organisation members and meets Ai Haibara.

The series is just alot more audience friendly, and manages to build an entire cast of Characters that the audiences want to see Develop.
Like Takagi and Satou, or Hattori and Kazuha.

Kindaichi is good, but its alot more adult, thus limits its audience, and broadcast time.
